two different pairs of shoes ...
There is a basic diference between the US and Europe: In Europe you are obliged
to pay a 'consession fee' if you use a radio or a TV. These fees include a copyright
fee and a fee to finance the state controlled Media (which they euphemistically call
'sevice publique'). You are allowed to record e.g. songs for your private use from
TV or Radio. The thing is that if you have a radio or a TV you have already paid
your copyright fees. There is no legitimate reason to pay twice for a song, the big
corporations have been paid already. But since greed has become a perfectly
legitimate 'neo-liberal' reason to make even more money, the coporations cleverly
incited substantial changes within the copyright laws, thus giving them the 'right'
to charge the individual user more than once for a product.
One should also take note, that due to private copying, they managed to slap an
extra copyright fee on recorders and recording media. If you own a photocopier
you are obliged to pay a flat 'copyright' fee, even if you don't photocopy protected
works.
Considering these facts it is more than understandable that there is no feeling of
wrong doing: the big music corporations already got their money. The problem is
they simply want more and thanks to their influce and in collaboration with the
state-controlled copyright-fee collecting agencies, they'll do whatever it takes to
justify their actions.
And, nobody has asked the most obvious question: are these downloads really
works that comply with the standards that diferentiate between protection-worthy
and -unworthy works?
And: 'Piracy' is only the result of 'legitimated' greediness and a sure indicator that
something is wrong with the pricing policy of the entertainment industry.
