The big lie here is the idea that copyright (and to an even larger extent) patent law gives the original author some way of earning money, and thus is an incentive to creativity and invention.
I believe this is a fundamentally flawed assumption. People create because they love creating. People invent things because they are inventive. Patent and copyright law have little to do with getting money to creators or inventors.
Ask a musician (anyone but the few very top names) and they will tell you they make more from touring than from CD (or download) sales. Do some research on inventors, and find out how many were able to make good money from their patents (or were able to keep or sell them for what they were worth).
The truth is, patent and copyright laws exist so that mediocre middlemen can make money out of having money.
If these laws were truly created to give the innovators money, why don't we guarrantee a share (as little as 1%) of the profits from any creation /go to the creator/ for their lifetime? It won't happen - the corporate system is too greedy for that. The sole heir of the writer of "The lion sleeps tonight" was recently doled out some cash by a large record company out of sheer embarrasment when the media found her in poverty. The author recieved a few hundred dollars. This is not an isolated incident. - Posted by: dimonic Posted on: 08/13/07 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
