The Internet is wide open...
Okay, let?s face it. Most Americans (adults) don't know enough about computers to protect themselves. There was an article a few weeks back, that was called something like, "Dumb & Dumber". It talked about people who just wanted computers to work without having to worry about security vs. people who love to work on them and open the hood up on a PC.
Now lets just think about this for a minute...Anyone who was born before the mid 80's I would say, did not grow up with computers, at least not like now, nor the internet. We didn't have home computers. What we learned was at work, not at home and not in school for the most part. Our children today have computers in elementary school. They are learning on computers and books in and out of class, which I think is great, but the industry has forgotten about the others, the ones that didn't grow up with PCs.
See, at the office, businesses have IT departments that deal with security, we don't have to, and it?s not our job. But now, at home, because of the industry, they expect us to know about security, about locking down our home PCs from our children and certain websites. I don't think that is right.
Now, do I think that the government should control the internet, NO! NO! NO! But I do think major companies should lock down information better. The internet is wide open...computers connecting to computers, servers everywhere, databases from here to over there. Go to Google, Yahoo, AOL and search for codes, crackz, hackz and anything else to do with computers and websites and if you even know a fraction of what you are doing in a sense, you can get downloads that can help you put yourself in jail.
Okay, with that being said, how often do people get caught? Well, not enough if we are having this discussion. What do we do? Well, I think there needs to be more people watching and maintaining server warehouses. That's right, there are warehouse's that are stuffed with servers and very limited people watching them, yea, they do setup security measures and view logs most of the time when notified of such intrusions, but most intrusions are welcome and before you know it, you have a virus/Trojan that is getting your information, either from your PC or a server PC that you have been to and left your information on it.
Hold companies responsible for your information, read the fine print that you always skip over and check "I HAVE READ AND UNDERSTAND THE AGREEMENT" or "I AGREE", THEY TELL YOU ALL THAT IF SOMETHING HAPPENS, THEY CAN'T HELP IT, IT'S NOT THERE FAULT! BULL CRAP!
It is their fault; it is only the governments? job to see to that, which in essence, they are not doing.
So, the bottom line is that companies need to spend more of their profit and hire more IT Techs that know about security and the government needs to make the companies, give them a report of what they have encountered and maybe then we will begin to help customers feel a little more secure when they hear of more arrest of crackerz and hackerz that are doing all the damage.
And one more thing might help, maybe, but every PC that is bought, should have ANTI-VIRUS AND SPYWARE INSTALLED, I don't care what company, weather it be McAfee or Norton, but something that runs itself like an operating system that all a customer needs to know, is that it is working and working great. Otherwise, we will still be having this discussion 5 years from now.
