Actually it does
A work, once published becomes part of the public body of knowledge. It is protected for a limited time, in limited ways, but it cannot be prevented from entering the public domain after it has been published. The only difference is time and the use it can be put to until that date.

I'm not arguing that copyright is a bad thing, or that creators should not have the opportunity to profit from their work. But the issue is that copyright is not an absolute right, it is a contract granted by the people for the benefit of the greater good, just like zoning regulations and tax exemptions. And if the contract becomes too one-sided (like copyright length extensions, DMCA and fair-use constraints) then the people will act. Wholesale copyright "violations" are a sign that the people are dissatisfied by the current situation, and that repeal of many copyright extensions are imminent.
