publication does not equal public domain
Anyway, the facts remain the same: content owners are more than willing to take advantage of public works to further their own ends,

**and where, exactly, in this article, in this scenario, is any copyright holder 'taking advantage' of anything? The abuses to copyright are most often incited by corporations such as Disney who are protecting their profit margin as opposed to a single individual (which is what copyright was intended for anyway, not companies) trying to protect their work and pay the rent.

but never take into account that their own content, once published, is a public work itself.

**If a writer is paid by magazine X to write an article for them, but afterward, Magazine Y likes the article and decides to run it in their publication, that is copyright infringement. Just because a writer has been paid by one outlet doesn't give another outlet the 'right' to use it, especially if they are also a commercial enterprise. Mere publication does not mean something becomes public domain.

**If we are to accept that bloggers are journalists, and that internet publishing is just as legitimate as other forms of publishing, we have to afford it the same protections and responsibilities.
