CompTIA: IE voted 'most influential' tech product

What placement is the technology that Microsoft stole to make IE?

I don't understand how IE can be the most influential product. But then, I don't also understand how Microsoft always seems to be the "me too" company and copies off everyone else, but is treated like they can do no wrong by non-tech people that don't have to fix people's computers.

The "most influential" to me would have to be the optical disc. Even though LaserDiscs came out earlier than 25 years ago, the CD and subsequently, DVD, finally dethroned LPs and VHS (although LP still lives on in Europe, from what I hear).

Optical storage and digital video allow for backwards compatibility in most cases. It might not be the #1 item, but it's up there for me. I imagine MP3 should be on that list as well.
