Why?
Not sure I get why? What did IE do that was so great that? It was a made rush to bring out a competing product to an existing market so it wasn't like it was first to anything. It stagnated after Netscape killed themselves.

Then there is WORD, a word processor in a market of tons of them. What's influential about that?

Windows 95 I'd give them half marks for. I don't think Windows 95 was all that influential though. I mean it was finally getting something that Mac users had for over a decade.

Now if I this were poll on business achievements I'd give this to Microsoft hands down. You can say they abused their monopoly status but that wasn't until after they achieved dominance. How did they get there in the first place. That's the impressive part. Even the OS business 25 years was an uphill battle. Back the Apple dominated, everyone had Apple II computers with color screens and lots of goodies. But somehow Microsoft got use using monochrome, no graphics systems where we'd have wait 10 years to get what I was doing in 1983 on my Apple II. That's impressive if you ask me.
