US once again leading the way ...
It surprises anyone that censorship is on the rise? Why?

The US Attorney General favors broad censorship laws in the US. The usual suspects are quoted: porn, "terrorists", and online gambling. But combined with the prospect of secret investigations and unsupervised police powers (National Security Letters) almost any speech that is not favored by the authorities could be a target.

The US internet infrastructure spends more each year to support Federal monitoring and surveillance activities than the cost of operating the ENTIRE internet infrastructure of countries like Malaysia. Companies are spending hundreds of millions of dollars to meet data retention requirements, to log and monitor every single internet IP transaction, and to effortlessly allow the government to tap into domestic web and phone communications with a simple typed command. The government is spending over a billion dollars on data repositories and data mining tools to sift through the information, fishing for anything it feels as a threat.

Face it, the Malaysians would love to have the powers and resources available to the FBI and CIA to monitor and punish people for saying or doing the wrong thing on the internet.
