They are alienating their users.
As an AT&T dsl subscriber, all my email comes through Yahoo email servers. They also have a personalized gateway homepage I could use, but I don't. When I get on the internet, I already know what I want to see, and it sure isn't Yahoo's nagging on my "personalized" gateway homepage, nagging you to buy in to even more of their "premium" services. I stay as far away from there as I can. At first it seemed great, because they filtered out the spam automatically, and I was able to see some articles right away that might be important to me. Ocassionally one spam message would slip through, or they would label a personal forwarded message as spam, so you do need to go through your spam to see if something is getting caught in their spam filter that you wanted to receive. Of course that means logging on to your gateway homepage to get to the email.

About a month ago, we got a notice that we would begin receiving some messages from their "sponsers" in our email. Now I'm getting 7-10 messages everyday that I regard as spam. Compared to the 100 or so per day they catch, I guess that's not bad. But I believe it is going to get worse. If spammers are willing to pay a tariff to get past the filters, then that is probably when the get classified as a "sponser." It is only going to get worse as the spammers catch on, and the ones already raking in the most , i.e., the worst spammers, are already showing up in my email client's inbox.

AT&T's customers will eventually get tired of this, and they will loose even more revenue when AT&T and others who use Yahoo as a gateway and mail server look elsewhere. AOL is already gearing up in that direction, so it won't just be Google cutting into Yahoo's revenue.
