Meantime we have to get work done.
The only alternative apps that are just as good as Windows apps are the lightweight ones like Mozilla. The more I use OO the more I don't care for it. Its methodology is not as integrated and it takes more steps to get things done.

AutoCAD may not make it due to the fact it has numerous patents and the GPLv3 frowns on distribution unless Autodesk provides them for free and they could not enforce them against another GPL member if infringed upon. Maybe Open Solaris or BSD.

Wine will not run AutoCAD in 3D. It is broken and there are other apps as well. Also those old Apps are no longer licensed out for they want you to license the new stuff which is more of a challenge for Wine. Also since the old apps and the OS are already paid for, why try to move the old app to linux/Wine. I mean if you get a new machine and you bought linux and put the old apps on, there would be no support and that is not how business operates. Besides all those apps and OS are a 100% tax write off so they are almost as cheap as open source.

Even linux has some serious hardware requirements these days. That school district when buying the new computers can run Vista without Aero. The school district will get Vista a lot cheaper than you or I, probably the same price as Dell in volume. So all the savings in licensing went to the additional labor in linux in setting it up. I wish these IT departments would volunteer there timesheets along with the price of toys to get a more accurate picture in these comparisons.
