We are only talking trasition strategies to use old licenses during
transition. Most often, there are good alternatives to the Windows only applications, often open source, that save you a bundle, and for large companies, they can customize and add features if needed.

And, since Autocad is used by few, it might be best to just leave them on Windows. But, sooner or later, Autocad will have have a Linux version.

But, we are not talking mass migration, we are talking maybe another 10% for Linux/OSX over the transition to Vista. Vista has a lot of cost as well, including upgrading applications. It just might be that Wine/Linux runs those old Win98/2000/XP applications better than Vista, on the existing hardware.

I remember an Oregon school district with a combination of Win95/98/ME that was faced with new hardware no longer running Win98 which was required for a lot of the educational programs they were still using. They went with Linux/Wine as the transition OS, hoping to eventually replace all of the educational programs with ones that ran on Linux. That allowed them to replace a percent of the computers every year, maintaining application compatibility across platforms. Vista was not even and option given the costs.
