Less music means more profits
If the major labels limit your listening to what they produce then they can focus on producing a smaller catalog of music and sell that to you. If they can get 5 artist selling more music vs having 50 artists selling the same amount they will make more per CD or Song sold.

The funny thing is regular radio usually doesn't pay any royalties. They do technically but it goes kind of like this. They pay say $10,000 in royalties but get $100,000 from the record company via and independent company to avoid payola laws. So yeah they technically are paying but come out ahead by $90,000.

I know this as a friend of mine worked in marketing at a radio station. They made peanut on advertising compared to how much was made via independent record promoters who paid they big dollars to put selected play list in regular play. Independent labels and artist would always try to get their music on the radio by dropping of CDs. My friend was given those CD as they could not be played to due to the contracts they held with the independent record promoters.

So if you were in their shoes would you sacrafice the money recieved for playing a big Label song so you can have the privilege of paying royalities on the independent song. I know I wouldn't.

I suspect you will see this behavior hitting internet radio soon. Raise the royalty prices then send in the independent record promoters. If you have a internet radio site with tons of listeners you will attract a good fee to play a select play list.

I only see this as attempt to control the market here.
