Actually
both the desktop and web are excellent platforms, though each has its strength and weaknesses. The desktop currently has the speed advantage and probably will have a discernable advantage for the forseable future; however, coming up with an application that uses all that power is becoming more difficult.

As for the web it clearly is slower than the desktop, but it has an advantage when it comes to consolidating information to provide a spectacularly powerful solution. Imagine building a cube that contains hundreds of billions of records and being able to slice and dice in a few seconds using an entire datacenter's resources or more. This is the true power of the web.

Over the next 5 years we will see the web applications transform into abstract decision making systems. For example, a band might think about changing a little of their sound if they can determine that current musical trends have changed between albums. Imagine being able to harvest that kind of information. Another example might be presenting people with a word and asking them to think of something related to that word, then rating the responses. To a marketer this is huge. The web represents a mechanism to gather vast amounts of information and potential decisions through an increasingly small and insignificant amount of participation by the users.

Indeed the web will reach a point where the byproducts of people interacting with the web will generate a huge amount of information that can generate abstract decisions, and will allow many to profit from.
