Obviously the article writer doesn't understand the state of "pirated"
movies. The image and sound quality are terrible, because of their size, they take forever to download, and since people that use file transfer software tend to be moochers/leeches, even downloading an entire film can be problematic.

Take a 4 gig DVD and compress it down to a 600 meg mp3 and you're going to have serious loss of sound and video quality. Anyone that is actually actively "pirating" this garbage isn't looking at creating a video library, they want to be able to say they saw it first, or have X gigs of movies to share or it's simply not available in their remote area to find at a theater.

In no way is the movie industry threatened for quite a while yet with any losses due to pirating what is currently available. Maybe if they were real rips and not these compressed MP3s... but then you still have the download crawl.

The movie industry made a bunch of noise when video rentals came out, that it would hurt the theaters as well, and the reverse has happened. To me it's the latest whine from people that don't know about things they don't understand.

Music is different. Because of their smaller size, good mp3s can be created of these files. Here, the fault is with the greedy music industry with their pricing. Right now, I can spend the same money to buy a new music CD as I can a new video DVD. Which do you think I will bother with? If the music industry wants to stop the pirating, they'll have to take a hit to their overburgeoning wallets and slash the prices of CDs by half or better. THEN people would buy them.
