Google has lots of programers working on many different Free Software
projects. They are big contributors to the kernel (A major kernel developer Andrew Morton works there). They made a lot of contributions to SQLite, which is part of Google Gears, and all of Google Gears is open source. They are contributing to SAMBA, and Jeremey Alison's salary is even paid by Google. Many of the Google engineers work on open source projects for their 20%.

It does not have to be all or nothing.
