Suppose at the moment the Google truck comes down the street, you are sitting in your car waiting for something and picking your nose. That act, now frozen in time, is there for the whole world to see (especially if you are at a tourist attraction area). Suppose you happened to be passing a "strip joint"? Or, suppose a hooker was just passing you in the street? This can work other ways.
Forgetting all of that, just how do you feel walking down the street or driving in your car knowing that you might be on camera? True, Google is just one snapshot at one point in time, but I think that the real issue is that technology is rapidly bringing us to the point of having us constantly under surveillence for other reasons such as crime prevention or to prevent terrorism. Cars now have "black boxes" which are beneficial to determine the cause of an accident. They are also coming up with great promise in cars communicating with each other to save lives but that same technology can be used to send you a speeding ticket if you accidentally go over the speed limit or even have to do some defensive driving to get clear of an accident waiting to happen.
It would be great if each of us were "perfect" individuals and we never strayed from the law (of God or man). However, we are not but do we really want to become a "watched society"? If someone asks directions and that person is a criminal or terrorist, caught on camera you could wind up on a no-fly list? And, suppose we don't want to be one of the 'moral'? It's still nobody's business or will our churches/synagogues be monitoring Google maps? Moralality is still a choice in this country.
If we had cameras and the current technology around in the year 1776, we would not have been able to overthrow our government in the war for independence. No? We would still be taxed by the queen of England right now.
Is this just the part of the iceberg that is above water? - Posted by: hforman@... Posted on: 06/16/07 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
