The developers can do all of Google's work for free
As a Developer I am more than happy to do Google's work for free, as that free work is licensed under a free license, that gives me and every other developer free access and usage of the Code. Also Google contributes a great deal back to the Free Software community by sponsoring such events as the Summer of Code, where interesting projects are sponsored by Google. I would have to say that all in all Google gives back at least as much as it takes. And if they make a lot of money in the process that's even better.
