Through Google and others, hopefully, the rich interactive web, will remain
open and freely implementable by all. I can imagine that gmail will be more like a desktop application once it is running on gears. We will get rid of the delays when searching contacts and email, reading email, etc. So, we will have a lot more benefits than just off-line use.

But, gears is not the end of the line by any means and we will need other technologies so that things like Google Earth can run seamlessly in the browser. Not sure what kid of a 3D rendering engine will be appropriate . . . .
