Microsoft, though they are the underdog can still be influential in this space with their money and power. The labels can use MS subscription model as an excuse not to push DRM-Free music (if it ever becomes successful). Again would we be having talks about DRM-Free music if MS lead this space? Remember that it's all about control with these labels, fighting piracy and suing moms and kids. Giving the consumer what they want (DRM-Free music) is secondary (except for EMI). Jobs is smart not to implement the same subscription model, because doing so will kill all talks about DRM-Free music. And he was smart to quickly partner with EMI because looking at the bigger picture; it will help persuade the labels to release their tight DRM-grip on the music faster. The direction MS is going with creating new business models around DRM will only hinder EMI's bold move and the progress (though slowly) to a DRM-Free world.
