Ah Yes - Subcription
If it was up to MS and they were the one's leading this market instead of Apple, we won't be seeing any DRM-Free music (Thanks Jobs & EMI). MS obviously have a huge stake in DRM (OS, Zune, PlaysForSure, WMV), and plan to creat new business around it in the future (said David Caulton in the entertainment division at MS). They have the power to persuade the record labels to support the eMusic 'subscription' model where there's no DRM, and you subscribe to download a certain amount of songs per month. But they won't, choosing instead to bend over for the Labels instead.

Without support from the leader Apple, the subscription model will continue stay in place and eventually die, leaving you and your fam with no music at the end.
