to degree or not to degree---?
I agree with some of your assertions and some of jfp's. But you're both wrong and both right.

It has been my experience that incompetents sommetimes have degrees and sometimes don't, and that the biggest influence on competence is exposure-- whether by education, training or experience.

However, I do have to add experience without education is a serious misuse of resource. For example, one of my interview questions for SQL engineers is using nested select statements-- why are they generally not favorable? The guy I'd hire ina second is the one that can tell me why the answer is rooted in the big-O (n sq'd) running time for that search-- which should be pretty much every Comp. Sci graduate.

To your credit though-- I've actually had comp. sci. grads that couldn't even explain big-o running times and their relevance on looping structures!!

In my observations (and I've kept close tabs) though, the educated (from accredited schools and not that AIU bullsh*t) generally produce better results than those without degrees by a difference of about 4:1. But I'm only one guy and I will concede that my data is insufficient to prove the case either way!
