The majority of newspapers' income generally does not come from subscriptions, but from advertising. Also, a number of newspapers are starting to release their content for free in smaller, portable printed papers (usually not delivered).

True, they can't charge as much for an online ad as print, but it's much cheaper for them to post the content online as opposed to daily layout, printing and delivering. If they want to go a step further in their online ads, they can look at where the site visitor is coming from and determine if the visitor should get served a local ad or one for a national/world audience.



The online presense that's hurting newspapers more than anything else is craigslist.
