Things learned as witness for AFP vs Google
As an expert witness retained by AFP in their case against Google, I read this
article with great interest.

After more than 18 months of research in preparing testimony, a number of
things became clear.

-The knowledge of reader response, reaction, reading and overall legibility is still
in the formative stage.

-That the majority of internet news users are in for a quick hit more than 80
percent of the time.

-That, as in other media, proximity to the viewer and interest in the topic play a
key role in click-through.

-That the combination of headline and ?blurb? or intro (especially when
accompanied with a thumbnail image) is more than adequate for the majority of
viewers.

-That the visual content of a well chosen and cropped thumbnail is clear enough
for viewers to comprehend.

-That the ?click through? rate from Google News to the originating site is often
measured in tenths of a percent of overall viewers (Google and Poynter data).

-That a buffet of head-intro-image packages draws more eyeballs than headline
and extended story, even with visuals.

The question then arises, if the majority of viewers perceive enough benefit from
browsing the aggregating site without clicking through to the originating site, who
benefits?
