How much of the content on the news sites is AP?
Just how much of the content in the papers owned and/or operated by the Tribune Company are actually from Associated Press (AP) sources and how much of it is actually generated (reported exclusively or initially) by one of the Tribune Company reporters? On a technical note, do the people who operate the sites (or publish/update the content) know how to use a robots.txt file?

For those that don?t know what a robots.txt file does, it is a way to tell search engines not to index pages or directories, as opposed to having them dynamically generated from a database (which is relatively slow) and caching the contents (which is fast).

A description of what Web Robots can be found at The Web Robots Pages (there are other sources, also).
There is also information on robots.txt on Wikipedia.
An fairly robust example of a robots.txt file can be found at Whitehouse.gov (no, this is not the porn site, that is a .com) which they could be used to hinder the search engines.

If they wanted to, they could just use a subscription system as found on several news sites. They could further increase revenues by either using affiliate systems (click/subscription conversions) or using an Ad server that charges (or tracks) based upon clicks (conversions or hits) for advertisers. This in turn generates revenues for both the "papers" and the advertisers.
