- Sales Slump
-
Removing DRM from thier music won't improve sales. The Major Labels are in slump because of the content they are offering. First it's limited in terms of choice and what you have to choose from is all the same. You can have 5 songs from 5 different artist and they all sound the same. This problem is not new. This has happened before, last time it was the late 80s. It was easy to blame the recession for the problem then but the real problem is the exact same one they have today. So today instead of seeing the real problem the look for excuses like piracy. The piracy flag was waved back in the late 80s with cassette copying same as today. The similiarities are amazing. The real question now is what are kids listening too today? In the late 80s it was music that would be called grunge in the early 90s when the music industry caught on.
Getting rid of DRM sure will help but I don't see it ending the slump. What will end the slump is the same thing that end every music selling slump. That's a new set of artists creating the music that people want to listen to. What will it be this time?
Also the music industry won't be enjoying a format change in this slump. In the late 80s people were switching to CD formats. A better quality, longer lasting, and easier to use product that you could make yourself. So people re-bought thier catalogs of music. This won't happen with digital music. I can too easily make my own digital copies for portable players. What I can't do is take an old LP and re-master it digitally for coversion to a digital format. The best you can do is an analog conversion as far as I know. So there was value in buying a CD of music I already owned. There is no value in buying digital downloads of songs I already own. - Posted by: voska Posted on: 05/17/07 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
