It's Legal to Defame Public Figures in US
Everything I have read indicates that as long as the ex students used their real names in the MySpace profiles there is nothing the principle can do and nothing MySpace should have done. That is unless the principle lead a very private life. Usually that isn't the case. Principles often talk to the press, seek publicity etc.

Let me remind all that judges get defamed in the USA all the time. Look at Judge Jackson. The same is true with business executives and anyone running for office, any talk show host and any reporter or blogger. In other words anyone who seeks to be in the public eye.

In the USA we do not have a government that protects consumers from those who would defraud us. Hence we have a mechanism to get the word out on embezzlers, cheats, frauds, robber barons. That mechanism is the public press of which the Internet and MySpace now is.

Of course there have been efforts to make the US more EU like. May God Save US from That!
