- This is not about taking down MS or anyone else
-
I really believe you see linux as nothing more than some kind of threat to MS but really and truly, it is not. Linux is just another OS, like Mac and Sun's Unix. Nobody has any intention, implied or imaginary, of taking down MS. In order to really realize what I'm talking about, try and envision the whole entire computer development as an industry which it is, the computer industry. Now, each faction, company or developer of software, regardless of type,
makes a contribution to other OS's. How, well from security issues to methods, ways and ideas of doing things. All of these systems are able to use the internet, printers, copiers, fax machines and related hardware. Some hardware can't be used by some OS's or versions as there are no compatible drivers. Why ?
Because most hardware developers, develop their hardware to run on the MS Windows system. MS has created some issues with this as many developers do not want to pay MS to have their drivers certified, so they ignore MS's certification. In some instances, these drivers cause Windows to crash, freeze or just fail to boot. The consumer gets upset, blames Windows and moves to get an OS that will work better. The end result is the hardware manufacturers continually update drivers, software and hardware. This is all to the betterment of you and I. I hope MS never goes down as they have made some of the largest contributions to the PC industry. Unfortunately, I can no longer support MS, not because I dislike MS, I just can't agree to their license terms and conditions. I now use Linux but hey, this doesn't mean I won't ever try, buy or use Mac even though I have no experience with Mac PC's, I think, I said think, I will be very impressed with Mac's new Leopard OSx. Does that mean I hope Linux will go down or Windows ? Of course not, on the contrary, I hope Sun's Unix gains popularity as we all need as many developers as we can get, no matter what OS they are based on. I speak for myself and you should to as trying to assume that you speak for the general computer user population is not a good idea as you really have no idea as to what they think, do or have to say and anyone reading your post would know that's a fact. Try and maintain a view on the industry instead of a small fraction of it as one helps the other to help us all. - Posted by: intrepi@...
