The laws need fixing, and not just for companies
but fixed to give consumers the proper balance of fair usage. Copyright law isn't nearly as 'old' as fair use and the home recording act, which have seen little to no changes to bolster the rights and privileges of the consumer. Copyright has seen Sonny Bono and other businessmen senators increase the life cycle of copyright, increases in fines and redefining what constitutes criminal activity, breaking away from the balances that supposedly worked well enough for both the supply and demand sides. With big music and movies lobbying with big dollars to their brothers in Congress, and internationally, there is no balance for the buying public as they are treated the same as the 'pirating' few and the illegal distributors. In a more proactive consumer base, the music and movie industries would have been boycotted into fair and balance years ago, and the vcr would have killed something, the lawyer squads not the industry.
