Gates Falls Short and Leahy Head in Wrong Direction
Bill Gates is on the right track, as has been Microsoft in the past on this issue. However, he misses the key element needed to make the identity crisis go away. It is time to give control of our names and personal data to the name-holder, and compensate them each time it is sold. After all, it is both the existence of and the actions of the individual that creates the private information that is sold annually for $4 billion.

On the other hand, Senator Leahy's bill veers off in the direction of favoring business over the consumer in its weak language requiring data brokers to report breaches. A federal bill will work but only if it gives teeth to individual control over Americans' sensitive data.
