- No free lunch--let market forces work
- Building and maintaining network infrastructure is expensive. When folks get a free (or underpriced) widget, they use lots of it, because market forces are not controlling resource allocation. The more videos jammed over the network, the more the network degrades for everyone. If you want an enhanced network and improved U.S. broadband standing in the world and one that can accommodate more Diet Coke/Mentos videos (gotta love it!), compensate the builders of that network accordingly, preferably at a rate that encourages meeting future demands, not just barely covering today's use. Let market forces work. One reason there are not oodles of competing networks is who would build them with a cloud of uncertainty hanging over them as to whether they'd get a sufficient return to justify their investment. Forced network buildout without commensurate compensation amounts to an additional business tax which discourages the taxed activity and risk-taking. Is this Argentina? Let's compromise--let the FTC grant start-ups licenses so they have the freedom to deploy the internet freely with minimal cost, but have others pay if they want to assist their customers in playing with bandwidth intensive applications.
