I guess the industry didn't feel, during the last X years of the CD burner/PC sharing era, they were losing all that much to piracy. Outspoken musicians didn't raise the concern until napster (or at least that's the first name that comes to mind). What you say is true about sharing a CD, but it still involves having one to share and burning it. I doubt is will ever be like the album era where many wanted some albums just for the artwork and as a collectible, but I think CDs have some of that draw. People still like to have their own CD library and not everyone is using an mp3 player with trasmitter in their vehicles etc. I think there is still some draw to own the object to have and keep and there are still nice CD liners with good artwork and whatnot. That doesn't by any means account for all CD sales, but it seems CDs are not seen as a threat. I don't know who should make the money for well crafted music or video. That's something the entertainment ecosystem needs to workout and perhaps the internet will have a positive impact on how that works out without having any downside.
