What you're describing...
isn't a DRM-free world, but a shoplifter's paradise. Big difference. As it has been proven innumerable times, DRM doesn't do squat against piracy. It just exists to create lock-in. On E-Music there is "someone on the till", as each month you have a limited amount of paid downloads. When you download a track, you get a DRM-free MP3 to do as you wish(within the law, of course). And the artist(or label) who made that track gets compensated from a part of the monthly fee you paid for your downloads. That's one way it can be done. Another way is to offer a DRM-less version online at a higher price, like $1 for DRM, $2 for no DRM. Then the buyer can make a proper value choice as to what he/she values more, price or flexibility.
