Steve's happy either way
Right now iTunes is selling well and supporting iPod
sales. If DRM is dropped by the record companies he'll
still have a powerful iTunes infrastructure that will
simply have a larger market.

The iPod will probably continue with its popularity
simply because the design is preferred by most
customers. If they dome out with an iPod based on the
iPhone without the phone part they will only gain market
share.

So it all gets back to the "old days" when the record
companies made their initial agreements with Apple.
Those agreements, while calling for DRM, did go a long
way in opening up the new market of legally selling
music over the internet. How that market develops in
the future will depend on the record companies, not
Apple or MS.
