Even the major labels are talking about a DRM free future. DRM has failed with the consumer. It's not being purchased and all it's doing is making a few companies rich from selling flawed DRM, and giving Apple huge amounts of power over the fates of media companies. Meanwhile, places like eMusic are already ahead of the curve, selling music without DRM and despite having no major label content, they're outselling all of the major label stores (save Apple).

I've never understood why record companies are willing to sell digital files on cd with no DRM, yet lower quality versions of the same files sold online have to be crippled. Once you're releasing a DRM free version of the file into the world via the cd, it makes no difference what you do with other versions. The game is already over, the file is going to be shared. Why bother spending money on DRM and inconveniencing your customers for no reason whatsoever?

Of course, none of this will matter in the near future. Independent labels already make up 30% of music sales, and 80% of music releases. Read here about how they're taking control of the industry:

And in yet another brutal blow to the RIAA, Target is now starting their own music label, much like Starbucks before them. We're seeing other corporations move into the RIAA's turf, removing them from the equation:
