Red Hat will be a winner too ... they just will have to wait awhile ...
This process, while tortuous and traumatic is going to be good for Linux OS in the end and will prove beneficial to Red Hat in the long term. There are many enterprise customers out there who for various reasons, want as little to do with Microsoft as possible and they will be natural Red Hat campers. Only a direct legal assault on Red Hat by MS will change that equation and MS is just not that stupid. Instead they will use the Ballmer approach (words are cheap) and attempt to scare away as much Red Hat traffic as possible. They will also likely continue to attempt to court Red Hat in hope of cutting a deal and may even succeed. But, in any case, Red Hat has proven to be a survivor over the years and, while this Novell deal will likely cause more customers to follow Walmart's lead, it may in fact also drive some MS hating Novell customers smack into the arms of Red Hat. We live in an era of fast paced technology, shoot from the hip deals, and resulting unintended and unexpected consequences. One thing is certain, technology is moving forward, neither MS nor the Free Software camps seem especially attracted to litigation as a solution, although neither can refrain from talking about it, and if things remain as they are, we are headed toward a new era in software that will bring rewards to MS, and all the various Linux participants out there as well and the customer will be the big winner from this new era in which they major player learn to compete hard but cooperate with each other just as aggressively for the sake of their customers who put the bread on their tables. There had to come a point where the free wheeling world of free (GPL) software collides head on with the proprietary world and the two approaches reach a rational and customer friendly position of agreeing to disagree and working together for their customers best interests. We are here. We are seeing it happen. And it is a huge and momentous event.
