"The US government barely touches our Internet for the most part."

You do realize that the internet began as a defense project, don't you? Hardly a case of the government bungling something. In fact, it is one of the rare cases where they did quite well at inventing something and bringing it to the public as an ROI in govt. As such, I have no problem with continued U.S. govt. involvement in its management. In fact, there is a strategic national interest in doing so. If other countries don't like this...too bad!
