Quo vadis, China?
I have no problem with Chinese firms competing on an even basis with our domestic firms. My problem is with violations of other firms' intellectual property rights by Chinese firms.

One egregious example would be the inexpensive DVD recorder built with powerful copying programs in its firmware - something not detected until the recorder had already been sold in a large chain of discount electronics stores, by which time a large number of these recorders had been sold, enabling owners of the recorders to engage in small-scale copyright piracy in their own homes.

Of course, we're all familiar with cheap "knockoff" versions of consumer goods ranging from watches to computers to DVD copies of movies emanating from China. This is outright theft of designs and other intellectual property, yet Chinese firms expect other countries to condone this conduct. Firms from outside China are expected to comply with Chinese law when they do business in China.

Until the problems of Chinese patent infringement, software piracy and copyright poaching are addressed in more than a token fashion, we should deny our markets to Chinese goods which violate our firms' intellectual property rights. We expect other countries to respect intellectual property rights - why shouldn't China?
