- Just how easy is justification?
-
I don't know about that. I know I've downloaded stuff I'd gladly pay for if I could pay for it. It's there on the net for free but no one is willing to sell it to me. So if I take I break the law and I fully acknowledge that I am doing so. No excuse here, I'm breaking the law. I wouldn't the law if I could buy the stinking product though. I'd much rather have a the real thing than homemade copy I got off the net. When and if it becomes available I'll pay for my copy.
I'm just like the other 80% of the population out there.
According to statistics they have found that about 10% of the population are criminally minded. They will break the law just to break. The other 10% or extremely honest and will always do the most honest thing possible. The remain 80% fall in the middle somewhere. That is normally they will be honest but if tempted enough with no chance of getting caught and the knowledge that no one is hurt they will break the law.
A study was done with a cellphone left on a public bench. 10% of the people just took the Cell phone, 10% tried to turn the cell phone in or find the owner, and 80% left the cellphone and after about 5 days they finally took it.
So you know what this means. It means that 90% of the population will commit copyright infringement if it's easy to do so. Hence the need for copy protections. They don't even have to be fool proof, just enough of hassle that the 80% won't bother trying to crack it. At the same time you can't tick off that 80% because they can justify breaking the law if provoked so overboard DRM will set up for a nasty backlash where that 80% will try to crack DRM or bypass it entirely.
So where are you on a scale of 1-10? 1 being a out and out criminal and 10 being the emulation of Jesus Christ. I'd say I'm 6 or a 7 depending on the day. - Posted by: voska Posted on: 12/19/06 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
