Yes it is
Yes, it's important to take responsibility for your own actions, but it is also important to understand that your actions do impact others. If you drink alcohol and then insist on allowing your inner jerk out in public, you're not only a prime candidate for a ride on the paddy wagon, but you're also a walking advertisement for prohibition.

By the same token, there are a lot of people (myself included) who are opposed to legalized gambling on moral grounds, but we get lots of ammunition from not only gambling addicts, but from operators who make it very clear that their primary interest is in separating as much money from as many fools as possible, the public welfare be damned (a casino is such a wonderful addition to any neighborhood). The fact that gambling by it's very nature attracts people primarily interested in a fast buck for little or no effort is also helpful in our efforts (gambling operations and swindlers tend to have many of the same "customers"). Money spent gambling is too often money that would have been better spent elsewhere, on a lot more important things, by people who are not in complete control of their behavior. If you want to try to change those conditions, thus taking away our best arguments, you're welcome to try, but I don't think you'll succeed.

The fastest way to lose your freedom is to abuse it; not only for yourself, but for everyone else. That's how it's always been and how it will always be.
