Leaky abstraction
The idea that "it doesn't matter whether your data is on your hard drive or on the net" is what Joel Spolsky calls a "leaky abstraction". It leaks because local hard drives are thousands of times faster than the fastest internet connections. It leaks because internet connections get cut off or disconfigured, because ISPs sometimes cap downloads.

Local hard drives will always be much faster and more reliable.
