Uhhh...
you are aware the web - which replaced the internet and which
we are using to comunicate right now - was invented in
Switzerland, by a Brit? (Tim Berners-Lee). And that the first web
servers were in France and Switzerland?

So by your argument, the language of the web should be French?

(as an amusing aside I think the first porn server (Belle du Jour)
was French too happy

The serious part of this debate is that web traffic in non-english
speaking countries is growing much faster than in English
speaking ones and is overtaking them in terms of volume and
capacity. To serve their populations, the people who design
those sites and run those servers are going to want local
language tools.

So we've got two choices.

We can say "Bite Me" - in which case they'll develop their own
web standards, which won't necessarily be compatible with the
existing ones (I think some chinese adminstrators would like
that, since it would give them a big advantage in dictating how
the web develops from now on) - cutting the web in half and
ultimately making the English-speaking part less useful than it
is today.

Or we can try to make a deal, which is what this is about.

cheers, Mark
