throwing around epithets
It seems to me that the eloquence quickly diminished and we're now reading excerpts from White House press releases. And initially, I was quite impressed...

LEt's define a terrorist. This is a person who indiscriminately kills unambiguously innocent civilian people. In general, they have some agenda; often political or religious. Often, the label is especially applied when the killing is gruesome in nature. The hijackers that crashed airplanes into WTC (and Pentagon) were clearly terrorists.

Now, while I have absolutely no sympathy for the Taliban, or the track record they have in Afghanistan, many of those arrested (captured, rather) in combat operations in Afghanistan by the 'coalition' troups, were paramilitary combatants fighting an occupying army. It is well documented that quite a number of those had never really attempted a terrorist act. This is, anyway, besides the point. The US legitimacy has been permanently undermined when it flaunted its own laws and put humans in jails without ever charging them. Nobody knows for sure if those really are terrorists. Only a fair judicial process (an institution US is rightly proud of) can determine that. There was no reason to deny them this process. Consequence of that is that US has no moral ground to stand on anymore.

Second (perhaps first), if you re-read my post, you won't find anything resembling (even remotely) anti-American hatred. I actually live in New York (have been here for 15 years) and know what's great and what's not so great about the United States. Unlike many who (to paraphrase you) spew xenophobia here, I have seen many other places around the world. You'd be surprised, but there are many really decent people outside the US too. And most of them actually respect Americans as well. Their beef is with the foreign policies of the American government.

You may call me anything you want, but xenophobe you cannot. I am almost 100% certain that I've seen more places in the world and met more people from various corners of the planet that you, and those experiences opened my mind.
