Few inaccuracies in the previous post, too
Re-reading your otherwise eloquent and passionate post, I just found out that there are factual inaccuracies reflecting rather superficial knowledge of the UN and it's work.

First, Security Council has 15 members; only five of them are permanent memers and they are the ONLY ones that have the power of veto.

Second, Germany never was a permanent member, and therefore, never had veto power. My previous post outlined the use of veto ove the years.

On another matter, in addition to France and Russia, another country had clandestine weapons systems export operations with Iraq (in violation of UN Security Council embargo); it was the US (actually, it was private US companies; same thing, though). I doubt, though, that you have heard this in the usual US news media outlets. Look it up on Google; it is true.
