Listen buddy....
You should remember just who bailed you and almost all of Europe out, when you couldn't do it yourself. If anyone has laid down their own lives for people of other countries, it's the U.S.A. Maybe it's time for Europe to quit bashing the U.S.

Now, to dismantle your points:
1) "It's ironic, though, coming from those who detain people for 5 years (Guantanamo anyone) without trial, or who torture POWs (or, for that matter, police who do it at home)..."

The terrorists that we have captured do not qualify for Geneva convention treatment, as they were non-uniformed combatants and did not adhere to war-time principles. You should consider that the detaining of many (it is to be admitted, that not all were correctly identified) of these people has been essential to not only American security, but European and world security. The people detained at Guantanamo Bay are almost all those who were directly involved in combat operations as part of terrorist organizations. They operate outside any laws whatsoever, therefore there is no way to bind their activities using a system that they shun.

2) "And, on the issue of the UN, it always does precisely what its member states want it to do, with one twist. There is ONE single member state that has the power to decide what does and what does not get done at the UN. If UN has NOT done anything (say, in Rwanda, or Sudan) it was becuase this particular member state torpedoed initiatives brought about by other member states.

In the end, UN is the way it is as a consequence of actions of one particular member state.

Anyone have any idea what member state it is?"

Not so fast. Any single member of the Security Council can unilaterally veto a resolution before it. And that power is used frequently by most members, not just the U.S. That is precisely one reason that the U.N. has been rendered ineffective. France, Germany, and Russia vetoed action items on Iraq a few years ago, and we later found out that both France and Russia had been selling military equipment to the Iraqis, including embargoed items. Some of the things included GPS-jamming equipment to disrupt precision guidance systems on missiles (who's really responsible when it goes off target and kills civilians...isn't that a nice PR toy?), night-vision equipment, and shoulder-mounted rocket systems. These are civilized UN members? Supplying this stuff to Saddam's regime? Don't you dare talk about the U.S., my friend. You have alot of self-examining to do about Europe.
