Well JZ, what I would do is...

in case of :
"What would do you do? Your enemy loads his warships with civilians, cruises off your coast, and starts attacking your cities. Do you respond, sink the ship with all hands onboard, or do you sit by and watch your populace die?"

I would send in a team to take out the ship, maybe a destroyer; then try to rescue the civilians. Of course there is always the chance that someone the destroyer might die, but they are military and that is the risk of war.

Of course, you don't seem to care about the civilians, but lets add a little twist. The people are civilians of YOUR country.

Better yet, there is a terrorist hiding in your building, right now, where you are, or your family, or your best friends. Think it's okay to take out the whole place now?
You might say "oh, but that won't happen", but why not, just because one building is in the country, and the other building is not, or is it the one building is filled with "us" and the other building is filled with "them", and the "them" lives are worth less?

as for:

"Yeah, totaly different world now.... ...Don't even have to issue a formal Decleration of War, just use the rules of the Geneva Convention as a shield."
So, what you're saying is you don't mind if someone uses torture on you also. It could happen, mistaken idenity; wrong place at the wrong time kind of thing.
You won't mind being in a 40 degree cell for 3 days, or being suffocated for a couple of hours?
You might say, "Won't happen", but it has.
To a man in Germany; CIA grabbed him, rendition to another a secret prison. Tortured, and held for a few months... Whoops, just a businessman.
Student gets grabbed, rendition to Saudi Arabi, get "interrogated" (tortured), tells about terrorist cells, plots to bomb the U.S.... Turns out, he was a student... just said those things to stop the torture.
Now imagine you're them; put yourself in their place.
Now imagine a U.S. pilot in their place, people "interrogating" him, with the same techniques. Captors have no fear, because "The U.S. does it also."

Hey, I'm not saying the terrorists are right, but I would like us to have a slightly better understanding of what causes someone to become one. Maybe with a few small changes we can reduce their support, reduce their numbers.
Instead of blowing up a building, send in a Delta force team; Setup some snipers, something.

One of the things I read about is most people don't even understand what the fighting is about, or what the difference between the factions... even our politicians (especially them).

Most people see a them and us problem, when some of the enemy are "us", living here.

I'm not saying don't fight back, just fight smarter.
