US leadership is short-sighted
Right now, other countries are arguing to include the US based internet in ongoing globalization... as I see it, that would be to our advantage... whereas most do not.

However, what if China decides to say, "screw you, we're gonna create a global consortium and build our own" ... what then?

Do we take the approach of the previous posters and say, screw 'em, we don't want 'em anyway?

Not the best idea, considering that collectively, every US citizen owes china about $30k (based on current national debt/bonds outstanding).

Also, what if we p!ss outher countries off enough and they spinoff a whole 'nother net? Consider that the largest WIFI global effort (fon.com) is based in Spain. Also consider that while it would take significant investment, another global network could be easily built provided a new network discovery protocol (instead of DNS) that used existing HTML/HTTP protocols... only that one, we wouldn't control.

Can you say VHS vs. BETAMAX on the public internet, all over again?

Yes I agree that there should be freedom of speech for all, but that is not the law in other countries. And just like Bush rejected the offer to join the World Court because of "interests in preserving the sovereignty of the US government" other countries have the right to act in the interest of their own sovereignty. It is up to the citizens of those countries to DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT if *they* don't like it.

Bottom line, I agree that freedom of speech should be allowed, but I also agree that sovereign nations should get the same respect we ask for. If we don't give what we demand, doesn't that make us tyrants? Or maybe even an empire?

And as for our so-called freedom of speech, try writing a truthful op-ed on some prominent public figure and see if you don't get some fire breathing attorneys on your a$$. Yeah, they may lose in court, but the objective won't be to win-- but to make you pay a hefty price tag for your right to freedom of speech. So yeah, its a right, but at what cost?

And who are we to tell others how to run their countries in light of our problems and loop holes?
