What a Christmas Scenario!
Don't they realize that "It's A Wonderful Life" will be shown right at the heart of this suit's publicity? Anybody who goes back a ways in the industry probably puts IBM right up there with Microsoft. SO, for an early seasonal story:

IBM (Mr. Potter) has craftily held back the hounds (lawyers) while circumstances hooked Amazon (Good Old Uncle Billy) into using "their" technology to provide a service everyone loves dearly (The Building and Loan). Now the twisted and bitter old loser, IBM, wants to swoop in and humiliate and discredit Amazon, so IBM can skim off the profits from all other web retailers (George Bailey), most of whom would consider "Suicide" before paying such fees.
This should be a PR nightmare, with many among us (the good people of Bedford Falls) organizing protests and fundraisers.
Seriously, shouldn't this be like Xerox theoretically inventing the mouse and the GUI? I don't know if they sued anybody, but courts should realize some things are so unversal and pivotal to PC development that progress can't be stifled by (regardless what IBM says) specious patent claims. You can GET a patent on almost anything thst doesn't claim to be a perpetual motion machine, enforcing it is another matter.
Finally IBM ought to know this will play out like their first attempt to exclusively own the PC market. Just like the XT BIOS, there will be non-infringing versions published and distributed before the trial even gets a good start. But what do you expect from the master of the lose-lose situation, IBM?
