f a company cannot benefit from patent protection, there is no way to afford inventions and research.

Maybe it's just me but "Ordering Items Using an Electronic Catalogue" (patent #5,319,542 and one of the infringements cited by IBM) sounds suspiciously like Ordering Items Using a Catalog - an idea almost 2 centuries old.

Pay for research? This patent protects an "invention" that could have been thought up during happy hour and implemented the next day, and is obvious to anyone contemplating an ecommerce business.

Otherwise this scenario would be plausible:

Partner One: "How will we organize our products?"

Partner Two: "Gee, I really have no idea. That's a stumper!"
