Only a handful of CEOs actually "get it".
If you want creative and smart people to work for you and provide you with wonderful software products, you have to provide them a place to work where they can be creative and happy.

Why oh why do so very few corporate leaders understand this?

It is not rocket science, people. Most creative people do not want, and cannot, work in gray, drab, sprawling corporate campus buildings full of gerbil cages. To make matters worse, the huge sprawling campuses are usually situated out in the middle of boring suburbia land. To make matters worse still, developers are often mixed in with project managers, sales, and marketing types who scream on the phone all day. Try getting into the "zone" in that environment. Ain't gonna happen.

Here in Seattle, more and more of the best software jobs are located in downtown Seattle. A place of culture and diversity. I will never work in some software company's corporate campus again. You folks in Redmond. I say to you. Enjoy your time in the land of Walmart. As for me, I will be sipping a latte within a quint coffee shop in Belltown.
