Orwellian.. Exactly!
Politicians want to be seen as taking action against . This is an election year. CP is an issue that alarms most people, thus has higher visibility. That being said, there are already mechanisms in place to track these people and most ISPs will cooperate with a federal investigation; so why is this new legislation needed? Profiling. There are vested interests out there who want to be able to run batch jobs against large volumes of collected data to 'profile' your consumer data. Your Internet searches histories are as valuable to data aggregators as my google stock is to me. I think anyone who is already being 'monitored' by a federal agency under 'warrant', has already unwittingly forfeited their activity history.

If this proposed bill is simply political posturing, it will be emphatically announced but then die quietly in committee.

If this is driven by the lobbyists; it will get piggybacked on a farm subsidy bill and we won't know about it until it is too late.

My gut feel is that America isn't still in shock from 9/11 and isn't as easily manipulated. So, without another catastrophe, the politically motivated bills that usurp personal privacy will not pass without major scrutiny.
